LPT-S – Low Pressure LNG Tank and Bunker Storage Solutions
As part of the Interreg Europe’s MARIGREEN project, abh INGENIEUR-TECHNIK GmbH initiated a project in cooperation with PARTNERS to develop a novel design solution for an LNG tank. Natural gas offers great potential for the future because of its low emissions as compared to current fuels.
On the ship, the fuel is stored in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Its low boiling point of -162 °C requires the use of cryotanks, which are mostly built as cylindrical Type C tanks and constitute a major cost factor in an LNG fuel system. The innovative tank is vacuum insulated, light weight (the walls of the inner and outer container can be made of thin sheet metal), and its shape can be modified to meet nearly every need. The tank’s structural strength stems from the evacuation of the space between the inner and the outer tank, which is equipped with pressure-tight insulating material. Our development goals for the vacuum insulated tank include
- a significant cost reduction
- an almost freely selectable shape
- a reduction of weight
- an approval in principle.
The prototype will be manufactured in the summer of 2017 and will undergo a comprehensive series of tests.
